NEWS: Holly Near Concert Celebrating 50 Years of Activism

The Syracuse Community Choir is thrilled to announce a one-night-only concert featuring the legendary singer, Holly Near. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at 7:00 PM at Plymouth Church, (232 E Onondaga St, Syracuse, NY) with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at or by calling 315-428-8151.

After 50 years of bold work, Near is still one of the most consistent and well-informed voices for change. Her music, described as “loving, challenging, funny, thought-provoking,” tackles social issues with a global perspective. An outspoken singer and ambassador for peace, Near’s performances are a unique blend of world consciousness and self-evaluation, delivered with both humility and boldness.

“I do not separate my music from my heart nor do I separate my ideas from my daily life. I open myself up to learning as much as I can about humanity and this mysterious life experience, but I do not relate to political work as a series of causes,” said Holly Near. “Moment by moment, I integrate what I learn into my personal life, personalizing my politics. It is from this personal place that I write my songs.”

The Syracuse Community Choir’s connection with Holly Near began in 1973 during the Indochina Peace Campaign’s visit to Syracuse, New York. The event, led by Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, showcased a passionate performance by Near. It was this performance that profoundly moved Karen Mihalyi, the choir’s founder and executive director. More than just a memorable concert, it helped shape Mihalyi’s own advocacy work in social justice and the peace movement. It also set the tone for the new choir’s musical direction. Near’s music of peace, justice, inclusion, and universal love are among a few themes that are deeply woven into the choir’s identity. Her return visits to Syracuse, including two notable collaborations with the choir, have solidified Near’s enduring legacy. As the Syracuse Community Choir approaches its 40th anniversary in 2025, the concert on April 30th not only celebrates Holly Near’s music but also her lasting impact on the community.

“It’s a profound honor to welcome Holly Near back to Syracuse, where her music and advocacy resonate so deeply with the Syracuse Community choir’s message of singing songs for peace and social justice,” said Susie Weiss, concert coordinator and lifelong choir supporter. “Her return is like a homecoming, a celebration of our shared journey through the power of song and a personal connection that has continued for nearly 40 years.”

Holly Near will be accompanied by the talented Tammy Hall on piano and Jan Martinelli on bass, adding their musical prowess to what is sure to be an unforgettable performance for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
