We are looking forward to the start of our Fall season this coming Wednesdays, 7:00 – 8:15pm!!
Our Zoom meetings are every Wednesday night for 10 weeks and include 2 guest speakers and a choice of small groups for you to join!
Around these activities we will sing, breathe, share, laugh, cry and nurture our community as fully as possible in these challenging times.
We hope you will join us!
Below is a list of the groups on offer. You are invited to join one of these for a 4-week block (dates listed below).
If you see a particular interest group you would like to join, please email Kath and you will be signed up ahead of the meetings on Wednesdays. All these groups have limited space and are on a first come first served basis!
1st half of our season:
October 14 with guest speaker, Robin Kimmerer
September/October Small Groups –
Rosey Oakes Lee & Shanah Williams – Loss and Grief
In this interactive group, we will name losses we have experienced, reflect on their meaning, and reflect on how music has helped in times of loss or grief.
Richard Gardner – Getting to know each other, getting to be known and getting to be heard.
We probably won’t be doing much singing in this group but will be working on the part of the choir’s mission of building community. I have found a bunch of questions on-line aimed at helping people to get to know each other so I thought it would be fun to answer them. Everyone will have time to do so, and are free to skip questions, or go off on tangents as the spirit moves us.
Marcia Hagan & Anne Childress – Paul Robeson’s life and work
Paul Robeson is a huge figure of inspiration and leadership by example. He used his talent as a singer to impact many people with issues of justice and encountered many struggles to make his voice heard. Marcia & Anne will share some of that story and his songs.
Karen Gillette & Alison Mullan-Stout – Creative Writing.
Join Karen and Alison to reflect, create, and connect through creative writing prompts and opportunities to share.
Lydia Dewing, Steven Cohen & Carol Mowat – Broadway musicals!
This has already proved to be the most popular group and at near full capacity!
Lots of us love Broadway – and this is a chance to share favorite songs and sing some of them together!
Wendy Yost & Kelly Ward- Social Justice for our times: A four-week series with talking and singing
9/30: Time to vote: We’ll look at what we can do (aside from voting of course!) to ensure an election that “bends the arc toward justice.”
10/7: Back from the Brink: A practical campaign to prevent nuclear war. See a video created by our beloved Peter Swords and Don Hughes with help from Rashid Mamun.
10/21: Black Lives Matter: A local organizer will share what’s happening in our community to work toward racial justice.
10/28: Health Equity: A Colgate Professor will talk about what the pandemic reveals about health care disparities nationally and locally.
Colleen Kattau & Ruby Ogno – ‘Earth-centered songs of resistance and revolution’.
Many of the most powerful social change songs from around the world have a deep connection to the earth: from “We are the peatbog soldiers” to “Bella ciao”, to “A desalambrar” or even “No Frack Maid” or “Mountain song” by Holly Near.
In each session we will (re)learn and SING these songs. The goal is to sing two-four songs per session.
